Orbit - Week 4 Update

Just a quick update for the Orbit Quilt Sew Along, just mine at this point, the others have been too busy to post. The most exciting thing (for me) about this week is that I have managed to combine everything into one nice big chunk... and doesn't she look glorious! I will be interested to see how this pans out over a year in terms of colour distribution.

Possible change of execution.

How I am going to quilt the top has been on my mind a lot this week. The original plan was to do decorative hand stitching on the coloured side of the blocks... this has gone out the window completly. Now I am tossing up the following ideas;

  • Quilting on only the blue side of the block, but not in my usual perle 8... something more delicate. The next question then becomes, subtle colour that tones in, or go outrageous? Neons perhaps??

  • Knotting. Lets forgo quilting all together for something textural and fun. Its a lot quicker to complete.... a lot to consider there.

So yeah, weigh in if you have some good suggestion as to that conundrum. Knowing me, I will change my mind a hundred times before this is finished.

Confessions about the things I have "messed up"

  • Second left most row... the two HST blocks had their position reversed with the longer HRT block. I decided to keep it in, its authentic and I was not so precious about the placement that it needed to be exact.

  • I wasnt thinking when I was ironing my blocks, so when it came time to assemble the pinwheel on the bottom right my center seam was not as exact as I was hoping. But again, its part of the journey and continual skill evolution. I am just hoping that when this is all together you wont notice!!!

Orbit Pinwheel, four HST blocks not quite lined up correctly.

Lastly here is a photo of the quilt with the inspiration for the blue chambray, my kitchen cupboard. It is the most glorious blue and the inspiration for me to move away from my usual white contrast. I think its my most favourite kitchen ever... not that I have had many!

Orbit quilt on my kitchen bench, the french navy cupboards were the inspiration for the chambray.

Until next week Possums!!
